BUCKEYE, AZ — Buckeye Union High School District is being recognized on the national stage through the publication of the new Special Olympics North America Unified Physical Education (UPE) Playbook, a comprehensive resource designed to help schools create inclusive physical education programs where students of all abilities learn, participate, and lead together.

Buckeye Union High School teacher Brittany Meola served as the lead author of the playbook, collaborating with educators, administrators, researchers, and Special Olympics leaders from across North America to develop a practical, evidence-based guide for implementing Unified Physical Education in schools.

In addition to authoring the playbook, Meola helped curate its accompanying online resource hub, providing educators with free lesson plans, implementation tools, videos, and best practices from organizations including Special Olympics, SHAPE America, NCPEID, Unified Champion Schools, and other national partners. The collection gives schools immediate access to high-quality resources that support inclusive physical education.

The playbook prominently features Buckeye Union High School District as a national model for Unified Champion Schools. Recognized as both an ESPN Top 25 Unified Champion School and a National Banner Unified Champion School, the district's approach to Unified Physical Education, Unified Sports, Inclusive Youth Leadership, and Whole School Engagement is showcased through classroom examples, implementation strategies, photographs, and authentic stories demonstrating meaningful inclusion in action.

The publication also highlights the experiences and perspectives of numerous BUHSD students, educators, coaches, administrators, and alumni whose work has helped build an inclusive culture throughout the district. Featured contributors include Superintendent Dr. Steven Bebee, Buckeye Union High School Principal Biju Padmanabhan, School Psychologist Harry Dickey, Character Coach Colleen Dickey, Unified Sports coaches Travis Haley, Chad Williams, and Emma Hull, Unified Physical Education teachers Abby Lyon and Melissa Pang, former BUHS staff member Emma Cattermole, BUHS Unified alumnus Braydon Ayers, former Unified Club President Chaad Jones, and Estrella Foothills High School Unified Partner Iliana Brown, the 2025 AIA Unified Partner of the Year.

To further share these best practices, Meola was selected to present at the Special Olympics North America Leadership Conference in San Antonio. Her presentations focused on the Unified Physical Education Playbook, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and school-level implementation of Unified Physical Education, highlighting the innovative work taking place across Buckeye Union High School District.

The inclusion of so many BUHSD voices throughout the playbook reflects the district's longstanding commitment to creating authentic opportunities for students with and without disabilities to learn, compete, lead, and belong together. Through this national publication and professional learning opportunities, the work taking place every day in BUHSD classrooms is helping shape the future of Unified Physical Education while inspiring schools across North America to build more inclusive learning environments.
